About

"Incarnation" is a word that gets thrown around often during the season of Advent.  We sing songs like “Hark the Herald, Angels Sing!” with the line Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity.  Wait!  What does that actually mean?  The more we think about “incarnation,” the more we realize that it is a packed word, impossible to fully understand apart from faith. As we ponder the meaning, emotions such as wonder, mystery and awe are evoked.

Sometimes, words are not enough to unveil deep meaning and truth.  That’s where the arts (music, painting, drama, poetry, etc.) come in.  The arts are often best used as a way to communicate emotion (such as wonder and awe).  Art inspires more questioning, thought, and dialogue.  The incarnation is surely a subject that cannot easily be explained or understood through text alone.

The goal for this evening is to explore the incarnation using art (primarily music and poetry) in dialogue with scripture.  Though we cannot (and don’t intend to) explicitly answer every question and take away the mystery surrounding the incarnation, our hope is to point to the one answer we have: Jesus Christ, “the incarnate Deity” who was and is fully God and fully Man.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:14

Details:  This is a joint performance from First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue and University Presbyterian Church of Seattle.  There will be a full band complete with strings and brass, using musicians from both churches.  Poetry and scripture will be read throughout the evening, highlighting aspects of the incarnation.

All of the money from ticket sales will be donated and split between two charities: FPCB’s “Jubilee Reach Center” and UPC’s “Haiti School Building Project.”
